Were you ever late to school?
"I wasn't ever late to school except when it was spring or almost summer and that creek would be calling my name. I just would take my shoes off and walk in the cool water quick like. I didn't mean to be late, but Miss Bishop would be out on the stoop at Belden School waiting for me and giving me that look. I was always hoping she wouldn't tell Ma or Pa. I got to bring her an apple someday soon!"

Did you have recess?
"Me and my pals would go out to recess two times in one day! Once in the morning in between studies. The bench was so hard that we just had to get up and move around. In the afternoon, Miss Bishop would let us out too. I think she thought it was a good thing to do since we were studying about the Mississippi Valley and where we live. We'd play tag or stick ball and try to remember our geography studies like Miss Bishop wanted us to do while we were outside. Sometimes Miss Bishop would play ball with us too. It was fun to see her hit the ball and run. Frankie would even play nice while she was watching and playing. Can you imagine that!"
